The digital learning landscape has changed and grown tremendously over the past few years, fueled by innovative solutions and smart automation. This is fantastic news for trainers wanting to expand their learning offerings and organizations looking for the right integrations for their Learning Management System (LMS). However, the many names and functionalities of these innovations can be quite confusing. That’s why we're diving into the three most common terms and explaining exactly what they mean. Learn all about SCORM, xAPI, and LTI.
Let’s start with the basics: what do these three acronyms stand for, and what are they used for?
Feature | SCORM | xAPI | LTI |
Full Name | Sharable Content Object Reference Model | Experience API | Learning Tools Interoperability |
Purpose | A standard for creating e-learning modules and tracking progress/scores within an LMS. | A system for tracking all types of learning activities (inside and outside an LMS) and collecting detailed learning data. | A method to easily link external tools or platforms (like videos or quiz tools) to an LMS. |
Now that we’ve covered the basics, let's take a closer look at the definition and applications for each.
SCORM is a technical standard used for creating e-learning modules. It stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model and ensures that online learning content (like e-learning modules) works seamlessly within a Learning Management System (LMS).
Think of SCORM as a universal adapter for e-learning: just like a universal plug adapter lets you charge devices anywhere in the world, SCORM makes sure that e-learning content can be used across different LMSs without modifications.

What is xAPI?
xAPI is a flexible, modern successor to SCORM. Unlike SCORM, which primarily tracks learning activities within an LMS, xAPI goes much further. It allows you to collect learning data from various sources, both inside and outside an LMS.
Think of xAPI as a smart tracker that records everything a learner does, regardless of where or how the activity happens — whether it's a quiz within an LMS, a mobile app, or even an offline training session. All data is stored in a Learning Record Store (LRS), providing a comprehensive overview of learner progress and performance.
LTI makes it easy to integrate various external learning tools directly into your LMS. No separate logins or platforms needed. Everything becomes accessible in one place, simplifying the learning experience for both employers and employees.
LTI allows trainers and organizations to embed external content seamlessly into onboarding programs, learning paths, or compliance training within their LMS.
