Managing SCORM packages at scale: how do you do it?

Do you manage e learning for multiple clients or within a large organisation? Then you will recognise the challenge. You have an update for a SCORM package and suddenly you need to apply the same change across dozens, sometimes hundreds of courses spread over different Learning Management Systems. This process is not only time consuming but also prone to errors.

Efficient content management matters for a strong e learning offering. You want learners to always have access to the most accurate and up to date information. The question is how to achieve that without drowning in manual updates. In this article we explain how to manage and update SCORM packages at scale in a practical and efficient way.

The problem: updating SCORM packages manually

The traditional way of updating SCORM packages is a source of frustration for many e learning providers. The process often looks like this. You update the content in your authoring tool, export a new SCORM package and then manually upload it into every LMS where the course is available.

This manual workflow comes with several clear drawbacks.

  • It takes a lot of time. Every update requires repeating the same steps for each course and each client. Time that is better spent creating valuable learning content.
  • It is error prone. When uploading files manually, mistakes are easy to make. The wrong version gets uploaded or a course is missed entirely, resulting in learners accessing different versions of the content.
  • You lose control. Once a SCORM package has been shared, you no longer control where and how it is used. Clients may continue working with outdated versions without you realising it.

For growing organisations this approach quickly becomes unsustainable. It limits scalability and causes frustration for both you and your clients. Fortunately there is a smarter way to handle this.

Linqur’s SCORM Proxy: remote updates

Imagine being able to apply a change to your SCORM package once and have it available to all clients immediately. That is exactly what the SCORM Proxy from Linqur enables.

With Linqur’s SCORM Proxy you can distribute SCORM packages without giving up control over the content. Instead of uploading the full package into an LMS, you place a small proxy file that points to the original content hosted in the Linqur SCORM cloud.

The benefits are immediate.

  • Save valuable time. Need to update something? You simply replace the central SCORM package in Linqur and the change becomes visible across all connected courses instantly. No more manual uploads.
  • Ensure up to date content. Your clients and learners always access the latest version of the learning material.
  • Maintain full control. You remain the owner of the content. You decide when and how updates are rolled out, all from one central environment.

Linqur’s LTI Provider Service: seamless integration

That sounds promising, but what if your clients all use different LMS platforms? That is where the Linqur LTI Provider Service comes in.

LTI, Learning Tools Interoperability, is a standard that allows external learning tools and content to be securely connected to an LMS. With Linqur’s LTI connections you can share your SCORM packages with clients without requiring them or you to switch systems.

The advantages of the LTI Provider Service are clear.

Seamless integration. Your content works smoothly inside the familiar learning environment of your client, creating a consistent user experience.
Keep your existing systems. There is no need for major changes to your infrastructure. You continue working with the tools you already know.
Central management. While the content integrates seamlessly on the client side, you retain full control over your learning offering within the Linqur platform.

Linqur API: connect, scale and automate

If you want to take automation even further, the Linqur API provides the tools to do so. An API, Application Programming Interface, allows different software systems to communicate with each other.

With the Linqur API you can extend your learning platform and automate repetitive tasks that would otherwise take up valuable time. Examples include:

  • Automatically enrolling users.
  • Managing courses and SCORM packages.
  • Creating and maintaining LTI connections.
  • Generating reports on learner progress.

The Linqur API gives you the flexibility to build solutions that fit your specific setup. Whether you run your own LMS or need advanced integrations, the API makes it easier to connect systems, scale operations and automate workflows.

How everything works together: a practical example

The real strength of Linqur lies in the combination of the SCORM Proxy, LTI Provider Service and API. A practical example makes this clear.

Imagine you are a training provider offering an e learning course on project management to ten different clients. Each client uses their own LMS. You discover an important update in the course. One of the models is outdated and needs to be replaced.

Traditional approach

  1. You update the content in your authoring tool.
  2. You export a new SCORM package ten times.
  3. You log in to ten different LMS platforms.
  4. You upload the new package into each LMS, hoping you replace the correct course.

Estimated time: several hours, with a real risk of mistakes.

The Linqur approach

  1. You initially share the course with clients via an LTI connection using the LTI Provider Service, pointing to your SCORM package hosted in Linqur through the SCORM Proxy.
  2. You update the content and upload the new SCORM package to Linqur, replacing the previous version.
  3. Done. The update is immediately visible for all ten clients inside their own LMS environments.

Estimated time: a few minutes, without the risk of errors.

Using the API, you can even automate this further, for example by triggering SCORM updates directly from your build or release process.

Take the next step in content management

Managing and updating SCORM packages does not have to be time consuming or frustrating. By using tools such as the SCORM Proxy, LTI Provider Service and API from Linqur, you can centralise, simplify and automate the entire process. This saves time and resources while ensuring that your clients always receive the best possible learning experience.
