How Medela offers accredited e-learning to healthcare professionals

Nurses, midwives and maternity care workers need accreditation points every year, and accredited e-learning is one way to earn them. With Linqur, every learner signs up with their professional registration number, and Medela exports what it needs for accreditation in about half an hour.

Healthcare professionals need accreditation points. Medela's e-learning didn't give them any.

Medela creates e-learning for nurses in hospitals, midwives, and maternity care workers at home and in hospitals. Many of these professionals have to earn a set number of accreditation points every year to keep their registration. Accredited e-learning is one way to get them, and they're glad of every point they can earn.

So Medela Benelux wanted its e-learning accredited. Ferial Bekker, Education Manager at Medela Benelux, registered the courses with three professional associations that approve accreditation. To award the points, she needs to know who completed which course, together with each learner's registration number, so she can submit the completions to the associations' accreditation system.

No view of who finished

Medela University, the company's global learning platform, was open to anyone through the website. Privacy rules kept the local team away from personal data, so they couldn't see who had completed a course.

No accreditation

The courses on the global platform weren't accredited, and the platform wasn't set up to collect what accreditation requires.

One setup for every country

The global platform worked the same way in every market, so the local team couldn't adapt sign-up, language or reporting to its own learners.

What they looked for

A platform of their own that shows who finished

1

Set up for local learners

A platform for their own Articulate e-learning, set up for their own learners and local accreditation.

2

Visibility of who completed which course

With the registration number needed for accreditation, per learner.

3

Simple for everyone involved

Easy enough for the Medela team, and for nurses and maternity care workers who don't spend their day in learning platforms.

Why Linqur

Easy to use, for Medela and for its learners

Medela builds its courses in Articulate. Through that work, the team asked a partner how they could measure completions on a platform of their own, and that question led them to Linqur. They didn't look further. Ease of use decided it, for the Medela team and for the learners.

Results

Accredited courses, a 30-minute export and nine hospitals on LTI

1

Accreditation data: accredited e-learning, because Medela can see who finished

Learners register with their first name, last name and the registration number of their professional register. Entering the number is required. In Linqur, Medela sees which e-learning each person took and whether they completed it 100%. That is exactly what Ferial needs to submit the completions for accreditation. Result: the e-learning for nurses, midwives and maternity care workers is accredited, and learners earn the points they need.

2

Reporting and export: from Excel lists and follow-up emails to a filtered export

Before, registration numbers were often missing. After one of Medela's first webinars, participants had left out their registration number, so the team emailed each person, waited for the answer and put everything in Excel. A colleague spent two to three hours on it, not counting the waiting. Now Ferial filters the report by profession, selects what she needs and exports it. "Now I'm done in half an hour, even when a lot of e-learnings have been completed," she says. Result: about 30 minutes instead of two to three hours, and no more emails chasing missing numbers.

3

Sign-up URLs and LTI: individual professionals and whole hospitals, from one suite

Individual learners find the e-learning through a QR code or a national training calendar for maternity care. They sign up and receive a Sign-up URLs to the course they chose, in their own language. Hospitals connect through LTI with the LTI Tool Dispatch and run the courses from their own LMS. Medela sees the completions from both routes in Linqur. Learners take the courses at all hours, some of them during a night shift. Ferial rarely hears from a learner who can't get in or doesn't know how it works. She sees that as a good sign, especially for maternity care workers, for whom it shouldn't be complicated. Result: nine hospitals connected through LTI, in the Netherlands and Belgium, with French-language e-learning for Wallonia.

4

Support: problems solved after one email

Learners told Ferial they had finished a course, but she couldn't find them in her lists. Linqur support traced it to a bug, fixed it and sent her a full export of the missing completions. Ferial gives the support a ten out of ten. She sends an email and the problem gets solved, often faster than she expects. Result: every learner affected by the bug still got their completion processed.

What took getting used to

Not every hospital works with LTI

In the Netherlands, hospitals connect the e-learning to their own LMS through LTI. Belgium is different: hospitals there are more hesitant about LTI, and many of them work with SCORM. For those hospitals an LTI connection is not the obvious choice.

Medela is now looking into this with its Belgian account managers. With SCORM Proxy, a hospital gets a small file to upload in its own LMS, while the course and the results stay with Medela in Linqur. For Ferial nothing changes: she sees the completions in the same place. Asked whether a colleague at a similar organization should work with Linqur, Ferial said yes, 100%.

“

It just works. It works well, it works simply, and if there are problems they're solved very quickly. I'm really not someone who finds her way into systems easily, but here everything is clear. If I press the wrong button, I can just delete it again without anything else going wrong.

What's next

More courses, and across the border to France

Three more e-learnings are waiting to be translated and finished. Medela is also looking at offering its French courses in France, starting with Sign-up URLs. Linqur plans to add French to the Sign-up URLs interface before the end of the year, based on the language of the learner’s browser.
